Buying a Phone Number

Buying a phone number with PhoneUnite is a fast and fun process. You can search for new phone numbers in over 40 countries around the world, so as your business grows, PhoneUnite can grow with you.

Do I get any numbers included with my account?

Yes, absolutely. All of our account plans include at least 1 local phone number. Most will give you the option to add a toll-free number, and our higher plans support multiple numbers per account.

Can I add more numbers than my account plan supports?

Yes. It costs $3.95 per additional phone number per month once you've used up all of the free phone numbers included with your plan.

Do international numbers cost more?

No. They are exactly the same as a local or toll-free number.

How do I add a new number to my account?

You must be logged in as an admin. After you login, click on Phone Numbers in the left hand column. You'll see a list of any numbers you currently have in your account. Towards the top right of the screen is a button that says, Add a New Phone Number. Click that and follow the instructions on screen.

Are new phone numbers added immediately to my account?

In most cases, yes. There are a few countries which require us to verify that you have a local address there, so you may be asked for a bit of extra information. Our support team will review it and then approve your new phone number. This is certainly the exception to the rule though. Most countries do not have this requirement and you'll be able to add a number instantly to your account.

Can I perform a vanity number search?

Yes and this is included free on every account (many other providers charge for you to get a number you really want!). You can search in our interface using number combinations or letter combinations. For example:

Searching for "ABCD" would actually search for "2223".

There's no limit to the number of searches you can perform, and of course, searching is free! Enjoy.

What countries can I buy a phone number in?

The current list of countries is available when you visit the "Add a New Phone Number" page within your PhoneUnite account. You can also see an up-to-date list here.

Adding Multiple Numbers

About This

Adding multiple numbers lets you expand your phone system to cater to users around your country and potentially around the world. In most countries, businesses will have a toll-free number in addition to a local number. As a business grows, it's likely they'll add more phone numbers as they expand offices and locations geographically.

How many numbers can I have in my PhoneUnite account?

Unlimited! There is absolutely no limit on how many phone numbers you can have. We support phone numbers all over the world too! We have toll-free numbers available in the United States, Canada and England and local numbers in almost any major country you can name. These numbers are available to all of our customers - you don't have to be on a high end plan to get international number support. They are all included as standard features.

I want different numbers to do different things. Possible?

Yes! In addition to supporting unlimited phone numbers, we also support unlimited call trees. Call trees determine what happens to a caller when they dial one of your phone numbers. Using PhoneUnite, you can assign different call trees to different numbers. You don't need separate PhoneUnite accounts or anything tricky like that. Simply create your call tree (with custom greetings, menu options or whatever else you would like it to have) and then assign it to the numbers you would like it to be used on.

How do I add additional phone numbers to my account?

Just visit the Phone Numbers page after you login to your account. You'll see a button towards the top right that says "Add a New Phone Number". Click that and the rest should be straightforward.

Can I delete a number?

Yes. You can do this from your Phone Numbers page.

Does adding additional numbers cost more?

It depends on your current account plan. Each account plan comes with a certain number of included phone numbers. If you've used up these, then the additional number will cost you $3.95 per month.

Can I give my employees direct phone numbers instead of direct extensions?

Yes. Just follow these steps:
  1. Add a New Phone number for them.
  2. Create a New Call Tree
  3. As the first action on the call tree, have it dial their extension.
  4. Assign that call tree to the new phone number you created for them.
  5. Done!

Inbound vs. Outbound Numbers

What's an inbound number? What's an outbound number?

An inbound number is any number that people call your business on. In the context of PhoneUnite, we're talking about a number that is associated with incoming calls to your account.

An outbound number on the other hand are numbers that you and your employees use to make calls to the outside world. A good way to think of outbound numbers are any number you might want to have show up as a caller ID.

So for example, your inbound numbers might be your toll-free and local number that go to your primary call tree in PhoneUnite. Your outbound numbers would probably include these as well, but may also include your cell phone number.

Call Trees and Inbound Numbers

Call trees tell PhoneUnite what to do with incoming calls when they enter the system. All call trees would be associated with an Inbound phone number.

How do I verify a new number?

Any brand new number you add to your PhoneUnite account (picking from our available phone numbers around the world) will automatically be classified as verified. A verified number simply means it is authorized to make outbound calls using our browser phone, iPhone app or any other tools we make available to you. It also means it can be selected to show up as the caller ID for outbound calls.

If you want to verify a number that is outside of this (such as your existing cell phone number), you can do this by contacting our support team. To do this, login to your account and click on the Support tab in the top right of the screen. Submit a new ticket letting us know the full phone number (including country code), what type of number it is (cell or landline) and how you are related to it (e.g. "It's my cell phone!"). Depending on the number type, we'll either text a verification code to you, or give you a call. Once verified, you'll be able to make outbound calls through PhoneUnite using that number as a caller ID.

In the future, we'll automate this process through the web interface. But for now, just drop us a line.

Will numbers I port over be verified?

In most cases, yes. Newly ported numbers will be automatically verified as part of the transfer process and will be available to use for outbound caller ID as soon as they are activated through PhoneUnite.

Porting an Existing Number

What is Phone Number Porting?

Phone number porting is the process of moving an existing phone number to PhoneUnite that you maintain authority over. In most cases, you'll be moving your number from your existing phone service provider.

Can you port over any number?

Unfortunately not. This process is governed by laws and regulations and is largely outside of our control. At the moment we only support porting numbers in the United States and Canada We are working hard on expanding this capability. Depending on your phone number location, it also may not be possible to transfer it within these locations.

If you'd like to find out, you can either start the porting process through your account, or you can contact us by going to the Support tab in the top right of your admin account control panel. Provide us with the full phone number and we'll do our best to let you know if we can port it or not.

How long does it take?

It depends partly on the number and partly on how quickly you can provide us with the necessary paperwork. A typical timeframe would be 2 to 4 weeks. It also depends party on how fast your existing service provider will process the request. We can assure you though that porting numbers is a priority for us, given that it largely impacts your ability to use the PhoneUnite service.

Does it cost anything?

No! Unlike most of our competitors, we firmly believe that getting you up and running on our service shouldn't cost you extra. Porting numbers does take man-hours and that's why many people charge for this service. But we do it for free as part of the process of getting you fully functional on our system.

How do I get started?

We try to automate as much of the process as possible. To get started, login to your admin account and go to Phone Numbers in the left hand column. Towards the right of the screen, you'll see a button that says Port an Existing Phone Number. Click that and follow the on-screen instructions.

Once you complete that form, we'll provide you with a pre-filled Letter of Authorization (PDF) that you'll need to sign and then upload back in to the interface. You'll also need to provide us with a copy of your most recent phone bill so that we can verify your ownership of the phone number. As soon as you have that process complete, we'll get to work on our end and contact you if we have any further questions or issues.

Is there a limit to how many phone numbers we can port?

No, we will port as many numbers as you need over to your account. If the number of phone numbers you transfer exceeds the number of phone numbers allowed with your account plan, you'll be charged $3.95 per month for each additional phone numbers above and beyond your account's limit.
